2008-2009 Review

This has been the busiest year since the courses were first run in the 1980's.

Understanding Structural Behaviour: 9 Courses

This course is still the most popular and in terms of its effectiveness, the most innovative for the delegates. The test that is used to establish a base line for the course shows a depressingly poor performance. This is, of course, a test of the academic system that produced the graduates. The story is the same; very little attention to teaching behaviour and too much use of computers.

Understanding Structural: Design 2 Courses

The USB course is a pre-requisite for this course which always reduces its frequency.

Understanding Structural Modelling: 3 Courses

Thus course is specially designed for a leading firm of consulting engineers for their in-house programme and is particularly suited to organisations that have an acknowledged specialisation in advanced structural engineering.

Understanding Structural Analysis: 3 Courses

See below.

Stability of Steel Structures: 2 courses

This is a new course, designed, and designed especially for the in-house programme in India.

Training in India

In January and February 2009 we ran in-house training in Mumbai and Hyderabad for an international company, based in Denmark. They are gradually moving all the structural design to India and this focussed their attention on a long-term approach to training.

Three courses were run at the two offices; Understanding Structural Behaviour, Understanding Structural Analysis and Stability of Steel Structures. These course supported a significant change in their design office procedures; engineers under training are now required to produce an approximate analysis of the structure, prior to a computer analysis.

We have seen a lot of airports this year, but is has been a most interesting year, especially as we are now permanently located in France, just outside Cahors in southern France.
